HSUHK – Manchester Research Workshop and Roundtable Discussion

This workshop gathered scholars from various fields. During the event, the speaker introduced the publication landscape and effective strategies for academic writing. Participants learnt how to create publication plans and strategies; for instance, they could focus on quality over quantity and think long-term about their publication goals. The workshop also emphasised the importance of clarity and readability in academic writing. The speaker suggested avoiding the use of complicated language, which is a common problem in publications. Last, the discussion time allowed attendees to share experiences and discuss challenges, creating a supportive environment. Overall, the workshop provided valuable insights and ideas for producing high-quality work and succeeding in academic publishing.


爬蟲教育講座

In the talk, the Student Union invited Nick and Joseph, the founders of the Hong Kong Beetle Research Society, to share their expertise on reptiles. They showcased iconic species such as beetles, geckos, and ball pythons, allowing participants to have close encounters with these fascinating creatures. Additionally, participants had the chance to interact closely with the reptiles. Nick and Joseph also provided valuable insights into responsible reptile care practices by presenting a list of do’s and don’ts for keeping reptiles.

In this talk, Ms. April Cheng highlighted the important link between sport and mental resilience. She emphasised how sport positively affects mood, vitality and self-confidence, building mental resilience. Participation in sports increases self-awareness, skill acquisition and builds self-confidence. Athletes focus on controllable factors to succeed, which promotes emotional regulation. Also, through group activities and games, students learn resilience and enhance mental health, concentration and self-confidence.

In this lecture, Vicky Fung talked about the concept and vision of “Every Life is a Song”. She shared how to use music and related creative projects to connect with young people and different groups of social. She hoped to cultivate the music and artistic cultural atmosphere in Hong Kong. The slogan of “Every Life is a Song” is “pop music for the people by the people of the people”.


Library Friend Fair 2024

Library Friend Fair aimed to build connection with Library users and collect their feedback on Library resources, services and facilities for further development. In this year, it was held by two different ways: exhibition and game booth. For the exhibition, posters introduced basic information of HSUHK Library. Also, the users voted on question related to Library. For the game booth, Library provided fun and interesting game to users and easy questionnaires to collect their opinions.


燈籠紙藝: 非物質文化遺產計劃

This exhibition organized by Department of Art and Design, showcased lantern artworks created by Master of Paper Crafting, Mr. Leung Kam Wah, and students. This exhibition also introduced the traditional craftsmanship and history of lantern making. The exhibition was one of the series of activities under the Intangible Cultural Heritage program and funded by Sin Wai Kin Chinese Culture Promotion Scheme.

Mindfulness For Wellness Poster Exhibition

Exhibition Area

The exhibition showcased posters created by participants of the “Mindfulness for Wellness” program, reflecting their understanding of mindfulness and the impact of the course. The posters utilized diverse visual elements and designs, incorporating soft colors, mindfulness-related symbols, and inspiring quotes. They aimed to visually convey the positive influence of mindfulness on participants’ lives.

Furthermore, the exhibition offered relevant books and e-books for borrowing, providing visitors with further exploration of mindfulness concepts and practical techniques. Through art and literature, the exhibition inspired viewers to prioritize their mental well-being and to discover ways to cultivate inner peace and balance.

 


Travel With Graffiti

This exhibition presented a series of street art images collected by Miss Kerry Yam, a student who studied the Cultural and Creative Industries Program at the Department of Art and Design, HSU. A walk through art history by HSU Student (AY2023-24)

This exhibition showcased the outcomes from the students of History and Theory of Art and Design AD1102 and AD2002.

The art history introduced various artistic styles, techniques, and movements. Also, it helped them develop an appreciation for different forms of artistic expression, such as painting, sculpture, architecture, and more. This was the main idea of this exhibition.


Design with Light

For the celebration of the Chinese New Year Lantern Festival on 24th February 2024, the BA-AD Year 2 students showcased their recent studio assignment project on “Design with Light.” These were their original creations using light either as objects such as lamps or light installations as pieces of artwork.

The design process, from concepts to the execution of ideas, was reflected in the final products and outcomes, representing the students’ unique interpretations of light as a creative medium of expression.

This seminar featured esteemed speakers: Ms. Antonia Yeung, Associate Vice-President (Development and Campus Services) at HSUHK; Dr. Pui Sze Cheung, Director of Student Affairs at HSUHK; Mr. Angus Cheng, CFO of Accel Group Holding Limited and Authorized Supervisor of HKICPA; and Mr. Kelvin So, Oceans Conservation Manager at WWF-Hong Kong. The speakers shared their experiences in incorporating SDGs and ESG principles into university education, corporate governance, and public education. Engaging discussions and cases studies provided students with practical knowledge and innovative ideas, empowered them to develop and implement effective strategies and programs.


藝術自療工作坊 成果展

Exhibition Area

The exhibition presented the students’ accomplishments from the well-being workshop. They used paintbrushes and colors to create their own artworks.

Under the guidance of mentors from the Wave5 Foundation, the students utilized Pastel Nagomi Art to depict their inner emotional monsters and found the courage to overcome challenges. They also explored the use of watercolors to portray different shades and created masks that reflect their true selves.


「小確幸‧好生活」服務學習藝術展

This exhibition showcased the coursework of the Service-Learning student project of CCI4002 module and co-organized by Department of Art and Design (AAD), Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and Amity College.

The Shun On District Elderly Community Centre held the Opportunities for the Elderly Project 「小確幸‧好生活」 and co-organized with CTL of community exchange activities – 「耆妙小確幸」. Also, they invited the students from AAD to join the Pastel Nagomi Art paintings. The exhibition was divided into three themes: relationships, following heart, and environment. This exhibition aimed to honor the efforts of students and the elderly who participated, while also provided an opportunity to enhance their efficacy and well-being.


Book Sharing – 孔孟周遊列國對現代生活的啟示:讀《孔孟以後的孔孟》

In this book sharing event, Prof. Poon introduced the interpretation of works from the Han Dynasty and Six Dynasties period regarding Confucius, Mencius, and their disciples. He explored different perspectives and approaches taken by the scholars of that time. Furthermore, he delved into how the teachings of these influential philosophers can be applied to contemporary life.

Dr. Chau Tsz Yan is an individual with a keen interest in literary walks and creative writing. In 2019, she authored a book titled “食字餐桌”. In this book sharing session, she presented her second book titled “小食部”. This book introduced a variety of dishes accompanied by heartwarming stories. Additionally, Dr. Chau invited Dr. Pang Chin Chi, Lecturer of School of Chinese, The University of Hong Kong and Dr. Tse Chun Yip, Lecturer of Centre for Language in Education, The Education University of Hong Kong as guest speakers for the event.


Made in Hong Kong: A Spark of Imagination

This exhibition featured poster designs created by year-two students from the BA in Art and Design Programme of HSUHK for the Fujifilm Design Competition 2023. In particular, three artistic posters created by Hang Seng University Art and Design students won the competition of different prizes. The theme of the contest was to blend cultural elements, vibrant colors, and futuristic sensations with the use of Fuji Film printing technology.

This extraordinary exhibition invites you to embark on a visual journey that transcends boundaries, as traditional cultural elements intertwine with the boldness of vibrant hues and the allure of futuristic design.

The exhibition “MOVEMENT AND PERCEPTION: Virtual Reality of Floor Design at Oil Street Art Space” showcased the outcomes of the initial project from AD3001 “Studio III: Interior, Architecture and Urban Design.”

Students were able to immerse themselves in a virtual reality experience to explore and visualize their floor design concepts. With the use of VR headset, they created extraordinary environment of a 2D design within a 3D context.

The Launching Ceremony of Cross-Institutional Metaverse Platform for Collaborative Team Learning was an important milestone in the development of real-time cooperative VR multi-CAVE systems. This project is a collaboration between Hang Seng University, the University of Hong Kong, HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education and Chu Hai College. The Meta-Universe Interactive Learning Platform can simulate real-world environments, creating immersive and interactive learning environments.


Rolling Style 3D Print Wheel Design

This exhibition showcased the outcomes of the first project from AD2001 Studio II: Objects, Products, and Machines by BA-AD Year 2 students for the Second Semester of AY2021-22.

This project aimed to teach students to tackle a basic product design exercise with simple functional requirements and concentrated on product aesthetics. Each student was tasked with designing one style wheel under the guidance of Prof. Hui Cheuk Kuen, Prof. Yip Chi Wing, Dr. Yang Yi Hsuan, Mr. Samuel Adam SWOPE, and Mr. Mauro Arrighi.

In Between Self-Reinforcing Strength & Co-Creation 回盪於自力與合力之間by artists Mok Yat-san and Man Fung-yi, and curated by Chan Sai-lok.

This exhibition theme revolved around mindfulness, mental health, and community art, all stemming from Mok and Man’s self-scrutiny in delving into their ‘Heartfield’ in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The act of ‘planting’ served as a metaphor for the daily practice of self-reflection and perceived the fundamental of life cycles. Drawing inspiration from nature, the artists created this series of works by incorporating recyclable bamboo.

From Painting to Urban Camping Design

This exhibition showcased the outcomes from AD3001 “Studio III: Interior, Architecture, and Urban Design” by students for the second semester of AY2022/23.

It presented the painting and the physical model of the urban camping solution created by the students. The exhibition aimed to illustrate and explain the relationship between art and architecture as correlated creative disciplines.


City Logos and Discourse

This exhibition showcased the outcomes of the research made by the students of Art and Design AD1001 Studio I: Fundamental Concepts and Skills module spanning three years of activities.

The students were invited to design a logo for a chosen city from Italo Calvino’s “Invisible Cities” novel. Three elements had been taken into consideration in the inception of this exhibit: (a) Italo Calvino’s “Invisible Cities” novel, of which you will find printed pages accompanying the design. Each city description paired with the logos that have been inspired by it; (b) What does it mean to design a logo; (c) What is the meaning of the word logos.

Paratext: The Info World of Retro Games

Exhibition Area

The first part of exhibition showcased classic posters, discontinued newsletters, flyers, small gifts, and more from game design companies, allowing students and the public to experience a pre-internet game world.

The second part of exhibition was an explorative attempt of cross-disciplinary collaboration and learning. Students from Asian Studies Programme (ASI4006 Food and Cuisines) and Cultural and Creative Industries Programme (CCI4004 Issues in Contemporary Cultural and Creative Industries) came together to explore the cultural landscape of Hong Kong portrayed in the video game Street Fighter, and to analyze the text from the perspectives of their academic disciplines. They then applied different media to create their own interpretations of the text. The exhibition showcased the students’ learning outcomes.

HSUHK Library 10th Anniversary Exhibition: 10 Years Blossom With You

In 1980, the Hang Seng School of Commerce (HSSC) was established with the Lam Bing Yim Library. After the expansion of the school, the S H Ho Academic Building opened in 2012. The Library was also relocated there until today.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary of the relocation, HSUHK Library organized an exhibition at the Exhibition Areas on G/F and 2/F of the Library to showcase the development of the Library from the old site to the current building, which also reflected HSUHK’s advancement and Hong Kong’s education development over the past few decades.

The G/F exhibition area showcased the transformation of the Library in the 40 years since its establishment. Precious and unique items were displayed on the 2/F, including teaching materials published by the Education Department and the HSSC Library Staff Manual in the 1980s. The former was the only copy among academic libraries in local higher education institutions, whereas the latter displayed the changes in operations and services of the Library.

The exhibition “MOVEMENT AND PERCEPTION: Virtual Reality of Floor Design at Oil Street Art Space” showcased the outcomes of the first project from AD3001 “Studio III: Interior, Architecture and Urban Design” by students for the first semester of AY2022/23.

This exercise was inspired by Oil Street Art Space and the opening of an Emergency Vehicular Access next to the project. Students were encouraged to explore different means of creating unique paving pattern by studying historical examples, they challenged to create an extraordinary environment of a 2D design within a 3D context under the guidance of Prof. Hui Cheuk Kuen, Mr. Samuel Adam Swope and Ms. Laura Cavanna.


Coursework Exhibition – AD2001 “USE of the USEless”

This exhibition showcased the outcomes from AD2001 “Studio II: Objects, Products and Machines” by students for the first semester of AY2022/23.

The students had analyzed and taken the inspiration from “The Little Prince”, Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s 1943 classic novel. For the displayed design works, the students meditated upon the ingenious uselessness of natural elements found in the book. Each student had been challenged to design an object from its useless nature under the guidance of Prof. Yip Chi Wing, Dr. Yang Yi Hsuan, Mr. Samuel Adam Swope, and Mr. Mauro Arrighi.

The Solo Exhibition by Jor Yin Fun on Chinese Painting Scroll ‧ Feitian – Revelation from Dunhuang Murals was organized by the Department of Art and Design. The Exhibition featured the long Chinese painting scroll and the crossover of corn husk artwork with Chinese culture under the inspiration of Dunhuang Murals.

Exploring Mixed Media Art – Exhibition of AAD Student Works

The Department of Art and Design organized an Exhibition Exploring Mixed Media Art to showcase artworks created by the students of AD1003 Technology I: Pre-digital (AY2021-22).

Under the guidance of Dr. Rochelle Yang, students demonstrated the ability to convey messages through a wide range of art forms, mediums and textures. The exhibition created an immersive experience to its visitors with various art installations and decorations.

The Exhibition showcased findings from the report of “Break the Silence: Territory-Wide Study on Sexual Harassment of University Students in Hong Kong” released by the Equal Opportunities Commission.

Students from the course AD1101 Analytical Drawing and Presentation (AY2020-21) offered by the Department of Art and Design showcased their coursework masterpieces in this end-of-term student work Exhibition.

Under the guidance of Mr Chan Kei Him, students used different media and tools to create a wide diversity of art makings, such as drawings, watercolor and poster colour paintings, printmaking, paper reliefs and more. The collection of works is now available in this online Archive.


Cultural Landscape of Local Communities in Asia

Connect and build local communities in Asia without boundaries – is the theme of an exciting project of student groups of the BSS (Hons) of Asian Studies programme.

Amid the Covid-19 epidemic, two groups of Asian Studies students found ways to get exposed to diverse communities and cultures of Asia. One of them surveyed the ethnic foodscape of To Kwa Wan and the other group worked with international students of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University to explore the rural communities and traditional knowledge of Japan

Lunar New Year Exhibition cum Couplets Writing 新年習俗展覽及揮春送福活動

Are you ready to celebrate the Year of the Ox? Any ideas of the origins of the traditional Chinese customs?

Organized by the Library, an Exhibition featuring stories of traditional Chinese customs of the Lunar New Year was held in Feb 2021. Two couplet writing sessions were delivered at the beginning of the Exhibition. Visitors of the Exhibition were able to pick up couplets of lucky blessings and immerse themselves in a warm festival experience.

At Ease 怡然  – An Exhibition of Sketches and Watercolor by artist Chan Kei Him 陳其謙素描及水彩作品展

Featured pieces included beautiful sketches and watercolor paintings, the Exhibition At Ease brought to its visitors a collection of artworks with a variety of themes by artist Chan Kei Him.

Mr. Chan has been with the Department of Art and Design since 2021 and taught the course AD1101 Analytical Drawing and Presentation.

This online Archive featured a selection of Mr. Chan’s works from the Exhibition.

An Exhibition of Watercolour Sketches by Professor Desmond Hui – in Celebration of the Establishment of the Department of Art and Design at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong

慶祝香港恒生大學成立藝術設計系 – 許焯權教授水彩畫速寫展覽

On 16 July 2020, a simple yet solemn ceremony was held at the Library of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) – the opening of the Exhibition of Watercolour Sketches by Professor Desmond Hui in Celebration of the Establishment of the Department of Art and Design at HSUHK. Professor Desmond Hui explained the theme and contents of the Exhibition as a collection of his sketches during travels in the past 6 years. The pandemic lockdown for the last half year had created a common longing of people for travelling and his exhibition hopefully would provide an alternative escape as a spiritual journey to the viewers’ romantic destinations – whether in Barcelona, Majorca, Provence, Tuscany, Scandinavia or even Sai Kung and the outlying islands near Hong Kong.
