Gale Primary Source: State Papers Online: Colonial – Asia, Part 1: Far East, Hong Kong and Wei-Hai-Wei
Description:
Part I contains the Colonial Office files on Hong Kong and the naval port, Wei-Hai-Wei, as well as the series on Asia more generally.
Hong Kong: The records of Hong Kong are primarily in two series. The first, Hong Kong Entry Books (CO 403, 1843-1872), contains full drafts of correspondence sent by the Governors of Hong Kong. The second, Hong Kong Register of Out-letters (CO 489, 1872-1926), provides brief details on the out-letters related to Hong Kong. Wei-Hai-Wei: This territory was leased by Britain from China from 1898 to 1930 for use as a naval harbour. The main series on Wei-Hai-Wei are the Original Correspondence of Wei-Hai-Wei (CO 521, 1898-1933) and Wei-Hai-Wei’s Commissioners files (CO 873, 1899-1930). These records cover a wide range of subjects, from troop withdrawal and police salaries to reports on minerals in the territory and sanitation issues. |
