Databases on Trails – Try them out (April 2014)

The Library has arranged trial on the following databases for you to try them out.
Factiva

Factiva is a business reference resource that provides access to a wide range of information, such as newspapers, newswires, industry publications and company reports, in 22 languages from 159 countries. The trial will run until 10 May 2014.

Handbook of Pragmatics Online

It is an online handbook providing up-to-date information on research in the field of linguistic pragmatics, conceived as the interdisciplinary (cognitive, social, and cultural) science of natural language use. Topical articles, such as anaphora, bilingualism, codeswitching, cohesion, discourse markers, implicitness, mass media, negation, social institutions, terms of address, and brief biographies of eminent scholars are also included.

Tips for Your Assignments

  • Kick start your research with SearchPlus to find a wide range of resources on a topic
  • Take advantage of the library materials such as print books, e-books, e-journals and databases
  • Cite the sources of your assignments with the referencing tool – RefWorks
  • Access e-resources from Home by setting VPN on your own computers. Read the VPN Guide to set up a connection
  • Ask a Librarian for help with your research enquiries

24 Hours Opening (25 April – 23 May 2014)

To facilitate students’ study and preparation for examination, the Library operates the 24 Hours Study Area to provide 24/7 access (i.e. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week) on the G/F of the Library during the following period:

25 Apr 2014 (Fri, 7:00 pm) – 23 May 2014 (Fri, 7:30 am)

To ensure safety, the Area is safeguarded by a Security Guard. You are required to have valid HSMC student/staff ID cards in order to access to the Area. Please tab your card against the card reader next to the side door (G/F of the Library) to enter the area.

DataStream Online Booking

The Library provides access to DataStream on a standalone workstation situated in the computer cluster on the G/F of the library. Booking on the workstation is now available through the Campus Room Booking System.

DataStream is a global financial and macroeconomic database that provides current and historical time series online data on finance such as stocks, indices, bonds, unit trusts, derivatives and economic indicators. You can also access the I/B/E/S and Worldscope datasets via DataStream.
