Description

The Tathong Channel is one of the 14 channels in Hong Kong. Bounded by Tseung Kwan O or Junk Bay (what used to be Fat Tong Chau or Junk Island) and Tung Lung Chau on the east, and Hong Kong Island on the west, this is the only eastern sea route to pass from South China Sea to Victoria Harbour of Hong Kong, via Lei Yue Mun. The viewpoint for this painting was from the Tseung Kwan O Columbarium where I visit from time to time to commemorate a family member. On a fine day, one can see as far as the islands of Sung Kong and Waglan, the southernmost parts of Hong Kong, and perhaps beyond, heading straight to the Philippines a thousand kilometers away. What would travellers to Hong Kong be thinking when they sailed through these waters, before the days of air travel?
